Events & Activities Child

Key Stage 1
Children in Key Stage 1 will be taught the following compulsory national curriculum subjects:
• English
• Mathematics
• Science
• Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
• Design and Technology
• History
• Geography
• Art and Design
• Music
• Physical Education (games, dance, gymnastics)
• Religious Education

In addition, we have chosen to enrich the pupils' learning experiences further by offering additional subjects:
• Swimming
• French
• Creative Thinking
• Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship
• Social and Emotional aspects of learning

National Curriculum Key Stage 1
Curriculum in Key Stage 1 (years one and two for children aged 5-7years )

We believe in a broad and balanced curriculum with emphasis on English and Mathematics. We use a thematic approach whereby all the different subjects of the National Curriculum are taught separately but organised around a particular topic. We follow the guidance given by the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies. Copies of these and all school policies are available in school. In addition we teach French and Swimming which are non-statutory. An overview of the work planned for the current term can be found below.

Autumn term YEAR ONE
The topic is Food and Health. The children usually have a visit from the school nurse and dentist during this term. At the end of term we celebrate Christmas with a concert to which parents are invited. Do please offer to help in any way you can ; perhaps the topic is an area of personal interest to you or you may have some resources which could be used in class.
LITERACY LITERACY
During the Literacy Hour the children will share a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts including Handa's Surprise, Oliver's Vegetables, Avocado Baby, The Little Red Hen, The Tooth Ball, Eating the Alphabet and Keeping Healthy. They will develop skills in:

Speaking and listening
The children will be encouraged to:
• Listen to and answer questions appropriately.
• Develop story language through role play and puppets
• Explore, play with and generate rhyming strings e.g. fat cat sat.

Reading
During whole class sessions and group reading the children will learn:
• To point to words when reading simple, familiar stories and make a correspondence between what is said and read.
• To recite stories with predictable and repeated patterns.
• To blend and read simple three letter words.
• To read some common words specified by the class teacher.
• To read other children's names, classroom signs etc.
• To recognise a sentence in reading
• To use growing knowledge of words, letter sounds, sentences and pictures to predict the meaning of new words and to make sense of what they read

Writing
During whole class and group reading the children will learn:
• To use rhymes and patterned stories as models for their own writing
• To write about events in their own life
NUMERACY NUMERACY
During the Numeracy Hour the children will develop skills in all areas of maths. Including:

Developing oral and mental skills

• Counting on in ones from any small number
• Learning addition doubles to 5
• Learning addition and subtraction facts to 5

Counting and recording
• Read , count and order numbers to at least 20 and write numbers to 10
• Say one more and one less than any given number to 20
• Say a number is 10 more than any given number 20
• Learn the word digit and know what the digit represents in teen numbers
• Begin to understand addition and subtraction and the sign used to record these e.g. + - =
• Count on and back in ones including beyond 10
• Begin to see pattern in number
• With money recognise 1p and 2p coins and find totals up to 10

MEASURES, SHAPE AND SAPCE
• Understand the vocabulary related to length and time
• Learn the days of the week and read time to the hour on an analogue clock
• Compare two lengths using standard or non standard measurements

FRENCH
 
Through informal conversation, songs and games the children will learn to introduce themselves, say what they like and don't like, and learn simple vocabulary to describe objects and food.
SCIENCE SCIENCE
Through work on ourselves the children will
• understand that we, like animals, need food and drink to survive.
• be able to name some types of food which make up our diet.
• understand that exercise is necessary for us to grow and stay
• healthy.
• understand the importance of keeping our teeth healthy.

Through work on electricity the children will
• Understand that everyday appliances use electricity. These include things that light up, heat up, produce sounds and move.
• Know that everyday appliances are connected to the mains and that they must be a used safely.
• Be able to make a complete circuit using battery, wires and bulbs.
• Explore how bulbs light up and explain what happens using drawings to represent results.
I.C.T. I.C.T.
Through activities linked with other curriculum areas the children will:
• learn to use key words to describe and label objects and identify criteria to divide sets of objects.
• learn how to collect information, enter it into a simple graphing package and present their findings as pictograms.
• learn how to save their work and to print work when appropriate.
• use a variety of programs to support both literacy and numeracy.

PSHE
 
Through circle time the children will play games which will help them to get to know each other and work together as a class. They will talk about the school and class rules and the reasons for having them.
GEOGRAPHY GEOGRAPHY
By following the adventures of a teddy bear who will visit different places in the U.K. , and hopefully the world, children will learn to identify a variety of places around the world. They will learn to use simple maps and begin to understand that other places are different from where they live.
HISTORY HISTORY
• For the children to learn about Florence Nightingale as a famous person from the past.
• To use videos and books to learn about her life, and understand why she is famous today
• To find out about hospitals today and in the time of Florence Nightingale and see how they have changed over time and begin to understand why these changes have taken place.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
• To hear a variety of stories both Christian and otherwise on the theme of sharing.
• To learn about Harvest Festival and of its importance to Christians. To learn about the birth of Jesus and how this is celebrated and to understand the reasons for giving presents
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
By making Fruit Salad/ Vegetable salad the children learn:

• the importance of eating more fruit and vegetables
• experience the taste, texture and appearance of a range of vegetables and fruit
• about making a product e.g. Fruit Salad by putting different ingredients together
• To practise using a range of tools safely.
ART ART
• The children will look closely at natural objects that they have collected and draw carefully using black line pens, pencils and pastels
• They will also use drawings of natural objects and go on to design and make a collage experimenting with different materials
• The children will make presents, decorations and cards for Christmas.
MUSIC MUSIC
For children:
• To develop rhythm skills using their voices, instruments and through a variety of singing games.
• to develop pitch skills
• to be able to repeat a simple pattern
• to be able to recognise different instruments and discuss what they hear
• to listen to music by a variety of composers including Tchaikovsky and Saint Saens
PHYSICAL EDUCATION PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Gymnastics
For the children to learn move with increasing control, in a variety of ways, including jumping and moving high and low over large and small apparatus.

Parachute
For the children to learn a variety of games which will enable them get to know the other members of their class and lean to co-operate with one another

Games
For the children to learn a variety of games in which they can practice and develop throwing and catching skills.

Swimming
For children to become confident in the water and improve the control and co ordination of their bodies whether swimming or moving around in the water.

In all areas of P.E the children are taught to use equipment and surroundings safely


Autumn Term YEAR TWO
The topic is
Sound, Light and Colour. The children usually make a field trip to Stanmer Park during this term and each class takes whole school assembly to which their parents are invited. At the end of term we celebrate the nativity at St Peter's Church. Do please offer to help in any way you can ; perhaps the topic is an area of personal interest to you or you may have some resources which could be used in class. Children may choose to learn to play the violin.
LITERACY LITERACY
Speaking and listening

The children will be encouraged to:
• Listen attentively and discuss stories and poems
• Act out familiar stories
• Ask questions
• Describes events and experiences
• Express opinions giving reasons
• Take turns in discussions and listen to and use other people's ideas.

Reading
• Read and discuss a range of stories and poems with familiar settings
• Read aloud with fluency and expression
• Learn and recite favourite poems
• Read simple written instructions in the classroom
• Read information texts including charts and diagrams
• Read on sight a growing number of common words

Writing
• Retell familiar stories in some detail
• Use story structure to write about experiences
• Use simple poetry structures to write their own poems
• Write simple instructions
• Write recounts of visits
• Use time words to structure a sequence of events, e.g first, next
• Spell common words correctly
• Check own work for spelling and punctuation
• Begin to use basic handwriting joins
NUMERACY NUMERACY
Mental Maths

The children will say the number names to at least 100. They will learn to count on and back in tens from any number up to 100. They will recall addition and subtraction facts for each number up to 10. They will also recall doubles to 10+10 which will, in turn, assist their mental calculations of near doubles.


Shape and Space

The children will use mathematical vocabulary to name and describe some of the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.


Number

The children will count, read and write whole numbers to at least 100. They will begin to understand the place value of each digit by partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and units. They will describe and extend number sequences including odd and even numbers.

Measure
The children will estimate and compare different lengths and weights. The children will also learn to read o'clock and half past times on analogue and digital clocks.
FRENCH  
Through informal conversation, songs and games the children will learn to ask questions, talk about sports, animals, food and drink. They will begin to link phrases together.
SCIENCE SCIENCE
This term we will study SOUND and LIGHT with a mini-topic on ELECTRICITY. While learning about Sound we will do various investigations to find out that sounds are created by vibrations, that they are carried to our ears by sound-waves and that sounds diminish as they travel further from their source.

In our studies about Light we will discover that we can see nothing in the absence of light. We will investigate various sources of light and learn about how to care for our eyes. We will find out about Electricity by constructing circuits to make bells and buzzers work. We will learn about the uses, and potential dangers, of electricity.
I.C.T. I.C.T.
This term the children will learn how to access information from C.D ROMs and the Internet.
They will make use of the interactive whiteboard when learning new ICT skills.
They will be given the opportunity to use websites such as the BBC education site, Ask Jeeves and Kids.
They will learn how to use 'Word Shark' and 'Number Shark' to support literacy and numeracy work.
They will also develop visual aids by using an ICT graphics package. They will look at the work of artists and learn ICT techniques which will enable them to produce Rangoli patterns and greeting card designs.
Each child will learn how to save work and to print work when appropriate.
GEOGRAPHY GEOGRAPHY
The children will learn about different countries of the World through the adventures of 'Barnaby Bear'.
The children will look at the similarities and differences between people, climate and culture in different parts of the World. Photographic images, videos and books will be used to support this work and the children will be taught how to use an Atlas.
Year 2 will also being looking at road safety and carry out a traffic survey in the local area.
HISTORY HISTORY
The children will look at two historical events this term.
The first will be 'The Gunpowder Plot' where the children will learn about Guy Fawkes and his accomplices and their attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament. They will consider why these people wanted to do such a thing, why their plan failed and the reasons why the event is remembered each year.

The children will also learn about Remembrance day and will begin to develop an understanding of why this is significant to our lives today. We will look at the events leading up to and surrounding the World Wars.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
The children will learn about Christenings and naming ceremonies.
They will learn about and discuss the meaning of the marriage ceremony in both Christian and Jewish faiths.
The children will learn about Harvest and how it is celebrated around the world.
Festivals of light such as the Hindu Divali festival and the Jewish festival of Hanukkah will be studied as well as Christingle and the Christian story of Jesus' birth.
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
The children will be asked to design and make musical instruments from junk materials.
They will look at a variety of 'real' musical instruments to help them to understand how they work and how sounds can be produced.
The children will experiment with different ways of producing sounds using different techniques, e.g. shaking, hitting, plucking. They will be encouraged to apply their knowledge to design and produce a quality musical instrument that will make a series of controllable sounds when played. Their work will be assisted by the use of computer graphics. Their work will be evaluated with suggestions made for future improvements.
ART ART
The children will be reminded of painting procedures taught in Reception and Year 1.
They will mix colours to produce different shades.
They will look at the work of famous artists such as Monet and Cezanne and note how colour has been used.
The children will compose their own landscape pictures using a particular colour theme.
The children will experiment with a range of materials and techniques to explore colour.
They will progress onto using skin tone shades to produce portraits.
MUSIC MUSIC

The children will learn to recognise and perform rhythms written in standard music notation.
They will learn to identify/hear notes G and E (soh and me) and sing and compose simple two note tunes.
The children will use percussion instruments to accompany songs and poems. They will record their ideas using graphic scores.

The children will learn how to control their voices and percussion instruments in order to make quiet and loud as well as long and short sounds.
The children will listen to and appraise music written by famous composers e.g Handel's 'firework' music
The children will learn to sing and enjoy a variety of songs
PHYSICAL EDUCATION PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Swimming
The children will use the pool to gain water confidence and knowledge of water safety. They will develop their leg kicking action to enable them to swim confidently and efficiently with a float. Children will be encouraged to develop and further improve different strokes.


Gymnastics

The children will experience using large apparatus (boxes, benches, floor mats, etc.) to gain confidence, poise and balance. They will learn to move their bodies in different ways in order to travel over, under and around the apparatus.

Games
The children will be encouraged to develop their games skills and abilities. They will continue to learn how to aim, throw, catch, pass and receive bean bags and balls, etc. with some accuracy and will put their skills into practice by playing simple team games.
