West Hove Infant School is currently taking part
in a local, national and global initiative called 'ECO SCHOOLS'.
Eco Schools project :
• Is a programme that promotes environmental awareness;
• Links curriculum subjects to develop education for a sustainable future;
• Is an award scheme that raises the profile of our school in the wider community.
• Is holistic and works by involving the whole school - pupils, teachers, non-teaching staff, governors - together with members of the local community, parents, local authority, media and local business.
The overall aim is for everyone in the community to have a shared understanding and responsibility in what it takes to run a school in a way that respects and enhances the environment.
Who is responsible?
Everyone at WHI is responsible for moving the school forward in Eco Terms. The co-ordinator of the project is Sarah Cavanagh and if you have any questions/information/want to volunteer, please see her in Room 10 or leave a message at the office.
Are there any outside officials involved?
• Brighton and Hove City Council provides information and back-up for local schools wanting to improve their ECO awareness.
• The project is run nationally by ENCAMS, a charity working to create a better environment (it also runs Keep Britain Tidy campaign and Going for Green brand).
• The Foundation for Environment Education co-ordinates
Eco Schools internationally.
What difference will it make to our school?
We hope the Eco Schools project will be challenging, thought-provoking and exciting.
It will bring WHIS up to scratch with current environment issues such as recycling paper and fruit waste, using electricity and water more economically, through very practical and positive actions.
So far we have had school and year group assemblies and shows promoting energy saving, recycling and compost making! We are also involved in the Fones4Schools project which has raised several hundred pounds over the last two years. This has been put back into buying 'green paper recycling trays' and compost buckets for all the classrooms, as well as video recorders to make sure we can still use our valuable visual learning resources.
West Hove Infant School Council have made information and reminder posters which have been put up all over the school: Turn off the lights! Don't forget to shut down the computers! and so on.
On an educational level, there are links to many curriculum subject areas, for example, science, geography, design and technology, PHSE (personal, health, social and emotional awareness). Year group investigations might include:
• Awareness of the impact on the school on the environment;
• How to use energy more efficiently;
• Making environmental issues part of everyday life;
• Developing decision making skills;
• A sense of achievement in making a difference and impact on the community.
Here are some pictures of our recent ECO week, our school assembly, Printer Man and some of the children making their own paper. |
